The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners has approved the $600.6 million construction of Concourse K at Miami International Airport (MIA). The project marks MIA’s first terminal expansion since 2007.
Designed to meet rising passenger and cargo demand, Concourse K will add six new contact gates, a jet fuel hydrant system, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, and two new baggage make-up carousels. It will also upgrade baggage handling systems to connect the Central and South Terminals, with an eye toward achieving LEED Silver certification for sustainability.
The expansion supports MIA’s goal of handling 77 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040. In 2024 alone, the airport saw nearly 56 million passengers and over 3 million tons of freight, making added capacity and improved operations a growing necessity.
“This transformative milestone will increase capacity, create jobs, and strengthen MIA’s position as a global gateway,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “It reflects a long-term investment in our airport and community.”
Construction is scheduled to begin following a ceremonial groundbreaking this summer, with completion expected in spring 2029. Lemartec-NV2A JV, LLC will serve as the general contractor, and Perez & Perez Architects Planners, Inc. will lead the design.
The Concourse K project is a major step in the airport’s $9 billion Future-Ready Modernization in Action plan, Miami-Dade’s commitment to expand MIA’s infrastructure, enhance passenger experience, and support the region’s economic growth.
